We'll Never Forget. |
December 13, 2007 |
My wife and I saw Ike in London five years ago. We witnessed a man with soul and passion for music and life.
After the show we met Ike whom signed my copy of his excellent book 'Takin' Back My Name'. We found Ike to be a beautiful warm person, offering a kind, honest handshake to me and a hug for my wife. Nothing like the person portrayed by the media.
I'd just like to end this by saying, I'll always love the music, especially the innovative guitar style. It didn't matter who was singing, whether it was Jackie Brenston, Billy Gayles or Ike himself. You know it's Ike even without a singer, his guitar was his voice, and man, could it sing!

While I've always been a fan of Ike and Tina throughout all stages of their duo and solo careers, I think when it comes down to it, his music will better survive through time, thanks to that linkage to the blues mentors he never forgot -and that raw authentic energey and sound he shared with them. I worked in the industry a few years; I knew Johnny Williams from the Basie horns who worked with Ike and Tina, one of my bosses worked with Ike at Fender Guitars in the 60's/70s, and we always respected his talent and drive. No matter what was going on in Ike's personal life, musically, he was the real deal and that quality was always there, something that his famous ex-spouse might have done well to emulate - I'm frankly a bit uncomfortable with her refusal to issue any public statement of support - I think that she owed him that much. I'm so glad that he found strength to conquer his troubles and move on these later years - and although I am terribly sad to see us lose yet another musical champion, he'll always be just a couple of riffs away from my heart. Rest in Peace Sir Ike - you've earned it more than you'll ever know..

I NOT ONLY SPEAK OF THE MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF IKE TURNER IN MY CLASSES BUT I ALSO SPEAK OF THE PRESSURES PLACED UPON HIM AS AN ENTERTAINER.
I WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT AND RAP WITH THE MAN.
SOME OF THE VERY BEST LESSONS I PREACH TO MY ATHLETES AND STUDENTS ARE TAKEN FROM EXAMPLES LIKE IKE...... AND ITS ALL ABOUT MAKING LIFE A POSITVE EXPERIENCE.

I recently watched an old concert of Ike & Tina somewhere in Europe. As much fun as Tina was to watch, there were times I wanted her and the other girls to sit down so I could enjoy Ike and his guitar and the way he led the band. What an influential talent. He will be missed.

I was so happy he won the Grammy this year and was hopeful he had finally got pass all the bad press. My heart is heavy and I will forever be grateful for knowing Ike and for him giving me my first lessons on show business..it has been because of him that I ever got involved with music. Deepest sympathies to the Turner family for your loss. Despite the sadness, be proud! Ike, in our opinion, is one of the most special persons in musical history. The early material with Jackie Brenston is superb... and the Trailblazer album he did with Billy Gayles is a musical masterpiece. It was he and his band who originated the sound of not only the fuzz guitar, but also incited many copycats of his signature guitar sound with his Bigsby-clad guitar. Thanks, Ike, for discovering some of the most brilliant artists to record on the SUN and Modern labels!
His legacy, memory and his wonderful music will definitely live on. It will with us-- the intensity of his works always brings a smile to our faces and despite any negativity, we hold Ike high on a pedestal of musical greatness.
